örlog means war in old norse. do you like war?
Hidden by Owner
no, it doesn't. there isn't a word "örlog" in old norse. "örlög," which is what my username refers to, is defined by cleasby & vigfusson as "the primal law, fate, weird [wyrd], doom." in old norse poetry, the word has sometimes been used to refer metaphorically to a specific battle (although the old icelandic word ör-lygi is more likely for this because it has a more violent connotation), which is maybe what the person who misled you into thinking that was thinking about. i believe that this leads it to mean "war" or "warfare at sea" in middle high german, so maybe a dutch person could confuse "orlog" or "orlok" as a word for "war." i think. that could also be danish. however, since you correctly assumed that i was using the old norse word, the meaning itself has nothing to do with war. the correct old norse word for "warfare" or "battle" is "orrosta."
